An Open Letter to All Medium Writers on Politics
How political writers can reach readers who don’t already agree with us, and how pub owners can help out
A number of Medium publications publish politics. However, most of them are followed by readers who already agree with the views expressed in those pubs. This is a problem for political writers who want to reach out to readers who may have different views.
You and I, political nerds that we are, need to stop “preaching to the choir.” “Pushing on an open door” doesn’t reveal any viewpoints not already viewed. “Carrying coals to Newcastle” doesn’t even make old castles more inviting to all.
And writing about “saving our democracy” is pointless when all our readers are already waiting until November to do just that.
To reach readers who’ve been Trumpagandized, we have to start publishing in different publications. To do this, we must reach out to the owners of these different publications to find out if they might be willing to help us out (not to mention save our democracy).
