Aside from the emotional jolt of this piece, which is considerable and which makes the story considerably good, there is an immediacy brought about by using present tense and sticking to the child's POV. In a writing memoir class, this piece could be used as an example of how to do it. (Note you do switch tenses a couple of times, I think by mistake, and you have a couple of typos--the editor in me must speak.)
