“Children with autism” are NOT the mistake. Autism is the mistake. I’ve thought about this quite a bit since the first person who commented on it told me that I was saying she should die because she has a disadvantage to overcome. What I decided, finally, was this:
Autism does have some advantages — Greta Thunberg has talked about this. However, it would seem that for many people the disadvantages far outweigh the advantages. How would someone who has autism like to have all of the advantages of a different way of thinking and none of the disadvantages? (If someone did have all the advantages and none of the disadvantages, we wouldn’t call this a disadvantage at all.) Saddling any of us with disadvantages, if you’re a God, is either a bad act if done consciously or leisurely or a mistake if done without enough time to be careful.
Please let me know if all this is explanation enough, and meanwhile I think you for being a good person who does not want to see anyone maligned.
