I don't understand how "a few million users at $5 a pop" is not enough money. Even if it's 2 million users, that's $10 million a month. The coding is already done, and recent changes to functionality have mostly been to remove some of it; that's cheap. It seems that one could run the business with 20 or so employees, which even if they were all making $100,000 a year, that's less than $200,000 a month off that $10 million, leaving $800,000 a month for some servers and server support, office space for the servers since people can work from home, and a few incidentals. So, how much money is the CEO making, that the company would be in trouble?.
