I haven't used "grok" in a l-o-n-g time, though there have been various occasions when I should have. I wonder if anyone today would even know what I/we mean by it?

And I can remember 50 years ago sitting on buses wondering about people who would go around in red robes and barefoot, get on buses, and chant mysterious stuff while everybody else on the bus averted their gaze. But I don't remember what it was. What you've written does sound about right.
