I think this is spot on except here: "their fathers promised them something ill gained, and which couldn’t be kept...." I submit that their fathers promised them a piece of the middle-class pie, which couldn't be kept because of the ever increasing wealth inequality and rapciousness of the top 1 percent. So, it wasn' their fathers--by and large--who were to blame.
