I was at Indiana University in 1983.

Cable news came along in the 1980s and 1990s. The business model of networks like CNN revolved around convincing us of two things: that new, important things were always happening and that we needed to stay tuned in to keep abreast of them. This allowed for the illusion of 24-hour “breaking” news, making it hard to distinguish between what was truly significant and what was just filler.

I was at Indiana University in 1983. I remember discussions about the results of making news departments become their own profit centers--required to show a profit or be cut. This is/was one of the results.
