In my time (I'm 81), women were not just the primary caregivers; except in rare circumstances, they were the only caregivers, whether husbands were (sort of) in the picture or not. I thought much had changed--though when I see a man being fatherly, I do smile to myself because in my time that was so rare and I'm so grateful now to see it.
