It’s the Grim Reaper with a Sweet Scythe!
Death bakes you cookies
Have you seen the “heartwarming the holidays” commercial I saw night before last? Hershey’s Kisses in red, green, and silver playing Christmas bells. A father and daughter baking sugar cookies, warm, just out of the oven. Then a closeup of a half teaspoon of Hershey’s sugar along with a dollop of chocolate unwrapped and pressed into the center of a cookie containing an additional one and a half tablespoons of sugar. After the commercial is over, “two cookies,” Dad will say, and Mom will agree. “Only two or you’ll spoil your dinner.”
Two cookies is about 3 tablespoons of sugar.
Night before last, I was assaulted by commercials featuring sugar. Sugar, both fringe benefit and nemesis of type 2 diabetes, heart attacks, non-alcohol fatty liver disease, gout, and what the National Institutes of Health calls “cognitive decline” and “some cancers.” Not to mention obesity. Three of the commercials were for fruitcake with apricot butter icing (6 tablespoons of sugar per slice), peanut butter fudge (2 tablespoons of sugar per piece), and a hot fudge sundae (3 tablespoons of sugar per cup).
I’m trying, grimly, to stay away from sugar. To avoid the grim reaper.
And yet I salivate. ’Cause it’s so hard to do without what I like and what I want…
