Many years ago, I lived in a tiny community where everyone nodded and said hello to everyone else. Not only did these encounters make the area seem safe to a newcomer like I was for a while, but I think the friendliness created the safety I craved. Friendly greetings create friendly feelings, which create a situation in which people look out for each other and therefore can trust each other.
