I know that at the best we've been a democratic republic, and at the worst we've been and are a plutocracy/oligarchy. But the organizations that evaluate the governments of the world did at one time label the U.S. as a democracy because citizens were able to vote and, by and large, who they voted for took office. They're now labelling us as a failing or failed democracy or an oligarchy.
