Thank you for taking the time to write a lengthy comment, Russell. I'll try to be as thorough in my answer.
ABOUT AVERAGES: Various of the sources I checked for information in these tables calculated averages, so I was copying rather than making things up. Could it be that averaging stuff became acceptable sometime in the 60 years since you say you were taking statistics?
ABOUT DATA SOURCES: I did include data sources. Check for underlines in the section on the markers for racism: education disparity, income disparity, and unemployment disparity. Oh, thanks for mentioning this. I also included links at the first mention of the markers.
ABOUT SELF-REPORTING RACISM: So, you are from Maine and your wife is from Kentucky, and both of you don't think that people in these states are racist. The research has proved you right. Maine is the least racist state in the country, and Kentucky is just four states down in the list. However, various researches have noted that people you and I both would call racist are insisting they are not. So, self-reporting is perhaps not the best measure. That's why this article is about what we might call institutionalized racism, which can be measured by education, income, and unemployment disparities.
