It’s a curious fact that if you hang a plumbline near a mountain, it is drawn very slightly towards that mass. If you establish the mass of the hill and accurately measure the deflection of the plumbline, you can calculate the universal gravitational constant. From that, you can work out the mass of the earth. I say ‘you’ because such calculations would be beyond me.
