You are right, of course, in that the word "socialism," as Roosevelt put it, is applied to any measure that benefits all the people rather than only the rich. But your right winger (oddly arguing a point that is mostly argued by left winters) is also right that we are only getting back what we pay in. Those of us who collect, after five or six years, are then collecting amounts that were contributed by people who died before they could collect or who were immigrants who had it taken out of their paychecks but are not elligible to collect it. The program would have more money than it has if it were not for Republican administrations, which borrowed money from the program and never paid it back. Oh, and it would have even more money if the rich were required to pay into it at the same rate that the rest of us are, but incomes above $120,000 (I think it is) are exempt from having money taken out--though they do collect.
